WHAT AIR QUALITY ISSUES DOES THE CHARLOTTE REGION FACE?
Under the Clean Air Act, the EPA identifies criteria pollutants and sets health-based standards for outdoor air quality. National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) have been set for six criteria pollutants:
- Carbon monoxide (CO)
- Sulfur dioxide (SO2)
- Lead (Pb)
- Nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
- Ground-level ozone (O3)
- Particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5)
In the Charlotte area, we are primarily concerned with levels of ozone and PM2.5. Ground-level ozone and particulate matter are the main ingredients in smog. Smog can have harmful effects on human and animal health, as well as plant life and aesthetics.
